Children’s Coordinator/Counselor:  Job Description

Responsibilities of the CC/C include the following:

  1. Meets with the director during the pre-program planning to clarify delineation of duties and assist with planning.

  2. Become familiar with camper applications; meet with referring school counselors before the end of school to help structure groupings and glean anecdotal information.

3.  Attends the Staff Training week held on the week prior to S.P.Y. camp in June  from 9 am to 5 pm and possibly an evening or two. A detailed schedule will be published in early May.

4. Conducts home visits with the parents/guardians of each assigned camper to meet            them, give an overview of the program and obtain necessary signatures. These visits take place as part of the staff training week.

5. Works with the director to create group assignments for campers – and oversees  group movements to activity stations.  Groups can and should take various forms: whole group, age groups, reading ability groups, gender groups, play groups (quiet, active), random groups, etc.

6.  Assumes responsibility for the safety of children and encourages participation in              activities, and encourages the building of community through children’s participation and management of their own behavior.  Suggest and draw from the children community values:  sharing, taking turns, listening…etc.      

7. Assists the Director in planning large and small group activities.

8.  Conducts daily activities as scheduled.

9.  Initiates, plans, leads, so that children learn management of their own behavior.               Also attends scheduled events involving parents/guardians as planned with the Director to offer feedback.  These may involve evenings.

10. Reviews and supports activities to develop established goals for each camper    with their group counselor.

11.  Reviews counselors’ daily logs weekly that document the progress of assigned campers in achieving these goals. Make recommendations to director and      counselors for adjustments, find/provide additional resources for support.

12.  Assists with daily clean-up activities and with camp closing the last day of camp.

13. Completes and submits an electronic program evaluation form at the conclusion             of camp.

14. Collects and reviews electronic evaluation of each assigned camper, completed by         counselors at close of camp. Review these with the director and prepares them for          designated board member to deliver to elementary school counselors at the start of     the school year.

15. Other duties as requested.
