About St. John's

What Makes St. John’s Special

In addition to our wonderful church building and our more than 250 year tradition, there are four key things that define our parish.

  • We are a Missionary Church, seeking to grow by sharing and witnessing to our faith.

  • We are a congregation deeply connected to and engaged in our community.

  • We are a church dedicated to nurturing a new generation in the Christian faith.

  • We are a family in Christ characterized by circles of relationship which bind us together.

History of St. John's

St. John’s still occupies the original site on the town square that was reserved for the “English Church.”  The first celebration of the Eucharist took place on Trinity Sunday 1752.  The first church to meet in Carlisle, the parish is named in honor of St. John, evangelist and apostle, also know as the “Beloved Disciple.”

Today, we are an extended family of some 900 baptized persons. Like all families, we have our own varied traditions and interests. When all our committees and ministries are counted, there are about ninety ongoing activities within the parish, from our choirs to the refugee resettlement ministry, the Church School, and the Twelfth Night Boar's Head Festival. You will learn more about these opportunities as you browse this Web site.

For more information about the history of St. John’s, please come to our Parish Office to purchase a copy of “The Spire on the Square”, an extensive history covering our first 250 years from 1752-2002. If you wish to take a "virtual tour" of our historic church, please download our illustrated Guide to the Church Building.
