St. John's Episcopal Church - Carlisle, Pa.

Church School & Christian Formation

Sundays, 9:15 a.m. to 10:05 a.m.

Pre-K, Kindergarten and First Grade:
St. Johns welcomes children ages 4-6 to our primary classroom in the Lloyd Center. Our goals for this age are for each student to gain a lifetime love of reading, especially God’s Word, singing, prayer, memory work, Bible stories, and art response. We introduce the nature of God, the plan of salvation, people from the Bible and the lessons from their lives. We challenge students to make a decision to know Christ and grow in Him. We also incorporate lessons on Christian character development. Presently we are using the FireLight Curriculum.

New in 2007: Three- and Four-year olds are invited for a special Pre-K class led and coordinated by Katherine Lively.  This class will meet in the Lloyd Center, beginning at 10:15.  The little ones are invited to attend the Young Children and Family Eucharist in the Lloyd Center Chapel at 11:00.

2nd and 3rd Grade:
St. John’s welcomes children ages 7-8 in our open space classroom in the Lloyd Center. Second and third grade is an exciting year of application of skills acquired in the primary class. They are taught about Service through singing, mission stories, Bible lessons, object lessons, and guest speakers to encourage them spiritually.  This is a year of learning more independence. Presently this class is also using the FireLight Curriculum.

4th and 5th Grade
St. John’s welcomes children ages 9-10 to their upper elementary classroom in the Lloyd center. We learn about the life Jesus led while he was here on earth and what kind of life we should lead. At the end of each lesson, the students have the opportunity to reflect back on what they have learned and see what changes they should try to implement in their lives. There is a strong emphasis not only on studying the Bible chapter by chapter, but also on personal application. Presently this class is using “Living the Good News.”

6th and 7th Grade
St. John’s welcomes our young people in middle school. At this age we are excited to help students transition from having the faith of their families to embracing a faith of their own. We accomplish this through prayer times, class devotions, Bible class, memorizing God’s word, and applying Scripture to real-life situations. Our goal is to help students be Christ-like leaders to their classmates and others in their sphere of influence. This is re-enforced in Middle School Youth Group. This class is also using My Faith My Life

8th Grade – Confirmation Class
The goals of this class are to offer a safe place for our young people to discern the response they make to baptism. We offer weekly classes in the library where our young people are prepared to be a faithful member of the church as one who accepts Christ's call to be involved responsibly in the ministry of his Church.  Such involvement includes:

  1. Proclaiming the good news
  2. Taking part in the common life and worship of a particular church
  3. Praying and studying Scripture
  4. Supporting the work of the church through; time, talent and treasure
  5. Responding to God's activity in the world through service to others

For more information, please see the My Faith My Life web site.

9th - 12th Grade
Thematic and Topical discussions on faith and life are important to this class.  The class chooses the direction it wants to go in terms of social issues, issues of theology and justice areas they want to discuss and respond to. A variety of ministry experiences along with the mission work of the church is included along with, a variety of denominational ways to pray and worship God.  Music as prayer, and the importance of the music of our young people, will be a part of the discussions. These activities are reinforced in Senior High Youth Group.
